‘Whitewashing’ (2026) by Jamie Lee is a performance art piece performed live on October 7th, 2026. Lee performs with three others in a milk-washing and cleaning ritual. As the milk is repeatedly scrubbed onto the artist’s body and the ground, wrung back into the pails, and thrown, the once-white milk becomes gray. Duct tape, clothing, and material color signal Obangsaek, the traditional Korean five-color spectrum (blue, red, yellow, white, and black), each color representing a natural element and cardinal direction. Through the physical, the performance explores the word ‘whitewashed’ in a negative connotation towards people of color in America– demonstrating assimilation and the mixing of cultures, asking why this very common social occurrence is often used incorrectly in context with people of color.
